The paper gives a brief outline of the history and evolution of the Saint-Denis abbey from a basilica by the grave of St. Dionisis in VI century to a traditional royal necropolis of French kings, laid under the last Merovingians. This tradition later supported by the Merovingians successors: the Carlovingians, the Robertinians, the Capetingians, was enshrined in the special ordnance Regalia by Lois IX, who finally gave the abbey of Saint Denis Basilica the status of French Royal Necropolis.

It compares findings of modern French historiography regarding French kings and Kings buried at Saint-Denis with details of the list of buried persons of the abbey itself published in its catalogue with evidence of French archeologists as well as the personal observations of the author during his visit to Basilica in 2002.

It gives lists of French kings of the Capetingians dynasty, ancestors of the daughter of Prince Yaroslav the Wise, Anna, whose graves survived at Saint-Denis till today.
